commercial commission

These are my first commercial commissions!

I was asked by Art Director, Wendy Hannay, to design a range of jewellery, which would be manufactured in Hong Kong, and attatched to greeting cards.
Above is a photograph of one of the cards with my necklace attatched, this is how it will be sold in the shops. Below is a scan of my necklace for you to see in more detail.
Above is a scan of the artwork (by Omnia Designs) used to illustrate the greetings card.
We worked together choosing colours for the illustrations and jewellery, and I designed each piece so that it sat well in the card format and complimented the flower or butterfly paintings.
This is a new way of working for me, having to think in a commercial way, creating for the mass consumer, to appeal to everyone (hopefully!) and therefore not making my usual more quirky pieces!
I was asked to make 2 of each prototype design. I had to find beads and charms to use that were cheap and easy to replicate in the Hong Kong factory.
This was a really interesting project, and great to receive a big cheque afterwards too!!
I'd like to say THANK YOU to Wendy for believing in me and giving me such an exciting opportunity. I dont think there are many art directors out there who would give commercial commissions to people of my age :)
It is a set of 6 jewellery cards, you can see more below.

my ones and onlies......

The bits i wear :0

This is my wadebridge east.... the sign itself is a junk-shop find, and wadebridge east was a train station nr. bodmin, which closed to the public in 1964, and closed completely in 1978 (i think)... and i wired it upon a chain! =p

This is a 1950's enamel, marcasite and diamante lobster brooch, that i wear on my...erm...tweedy (!) jacket. I bought it a couple of months ago from my local antiques centre; picture house antiques.

This is my Vivienne westwood brooch! I bought it at about a 10th of the retail price, second hand from ebay! (it's genuine and everything..=) i often wear this with a polo shirt and necktie... rofl,,

I bought my bullet from ebay. =) it steal at three pounds something... lol i put it on a 'new' chain, and erm.... "next please!.."

This is a my very own octopussy. He came all the way from Hong-kong (via eBay) and now lives around my neck / here generally....

I bought the mini paint set from an art gallery in cornwall for 50p, epoxy-ied it shut, and it is now enslaved...FOREVER!!!!

Finally, a few plastic bangles.... bought from afflecks palace in manchester ( - a very big thing with lots of little shops inside it... =D )
Happy..erm..thursday....

incredibly(, upcycledly, silverly) spesh....

...al...!
This necklace is made with some of my collection of vintage sterling (a couple are 80% from the continent) silver rings, 6 silver trace chains, 6 sterling silver vintage st. christophers, and a silver toggle!
[click on image to make biggerer]
I really like the way this necklace hangs when worn. The weight of the rings makes that half hang in a more fluid curve, where the lighter chains hang more vertically, which in turn, make the saint christophers hang towards one side!
Let me know what you think!
Toby.
